Watch this short video to learn what is best to do once your timeshare exchange is confirmed.
What You Must Do Once Your Timeshare Exchange has Been Confirmed
1. Call the Resort
About a week after you receive your timeshare exchange confirmation, you should call the timeshare resort directly and confirm your timeshare reservation. It takes both RCI and Interval International about a week to notify the host resort of your reservation.
Only once in more than 50 of my own timeshare exchanges did a timeshare resort not have my reservation, but it was in Hawaii. If I hadn’t double checked I would have paid the airfare and car rental only to show up and be told I didn’t have a room. That would have been a disaster! It seldom happens but it’s worth a quick phone call to be sure it doesn’t happen to you.
2. Confirm Your Arrival Date
Most timeshares have a Saturday or Sunday check in but don’t automatically assume that. There is a fantastic resort on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Club Cascadas, that only has a Thursday check in. And many resorts are going to 7-day check in.
Warning: If your check in day is a Friday, and you won’t be checking in until Saturday, make sure you let the resort know. Many timeshare resorts are requiring it now. Each resort will have their own “no show” policy.
This is a good time to enquire about adding a few days to the beginning or end of your vacation if you need them. Timeshares are not like hotels. Timeshare Resorts consistently have a higher occupancy ratio, and if you wait until you arrive to add extra vacation days to your timeshare exchange, you may be out of luck.
3. Confirm Your Villa Size
Next, you will want to confirm with the resort what size villa they have reserved for you. Your confirmation from RCI or II will show what size unit you should be getting.
So if your confirmation has you in a 2 bedroom villa, make sure the timeshare resort doesn’t have you in a 1 bedroom. Even though this does happen more frequently than a lost reservation it’s still not a common occurrence. But if there are any problems, you want to catch it as early as possible.
4. Confirm the Check in Time
Most of the timeshares in RCI and II have a check in time of 4:00 P.M. The reason for such a late check in time is because of nearly everyone checking in and out on the same day. Check out time is usually 10:00 A.M. so all of the rooms have to be cleaned between those times.
You can always ask for an early check in or a late checkout, but they are hard to get.
5. Speak with the Resort’s Activities Director
And while you’re at it, take the opportunity to speak with the concierge or activities director at the resort. Besides asking about them about the must do activities in the area, make sure you ask which of them should be booked in advance.
For instance, the horseback ride into Haleakala Crater on Maui is usually booked up 1 or 2 months in advance since only a limited amount of people are allowed in each day. This will prepare you for a great vacation.
If you’re bringing kids, you can find out if there is a Kid’s Club and/or organized children’s activities. The timeshare industry is very kid friendly and I can’t tell you how many times a potential client told me that they needed a vacation after they took their children to a hotel.
